Postponed: The World of Elizabeth Jennings

In deference to this moment of immense tragedy in our country, and in solidarity with communities fighting for justice, MAS is postponing public programming for the rest of this week.

Join us for a presentation by author Jerry Mikorenda, about his book, America’s First Freedom Rider: Elizabeth Jennings, Chester A. Arthur, and the Early Fight for Civil Rights.

In 1854, Elizabeth Jennings desegregated NYC’s transit system 100 years before Rosa Parks in an era of few civil rights victories. Her father Thomas, a resolute abolitionist, was the first African American to receive a US patent. The Jennings family saga spans the history of New York City and the struggle for human rights.

Jerry will provide a 30-minute presentation entitled, The World of Elizabeth Jennings, that shows the sights, people, and landmarks of old New York as her momentous battle with the Third Avenue Railroad unfolded on the streets of Manhattan and in Brooklyn’s Supreme Court. The freedoms that she won underpin the civil rights and gender equality movements that are still a battlefront today.

There will be the opportunity for Q&A following the presentation.
